In 2012, Vancouver E-Comm 9-1-1 commissioned Canadian design firm Station X to create a series of ads for the "Tough Call" campaign. The goal of the advertisements was to create awareness for the emergency number service and responsible use of the calling, specifically regarding accidental dailing of 911. Station X created the concept for the ads: initially the images would appear like emergencies, but on scanning the image with a cell phone, a hidden QR code would reveal the full image to be a mundane situation. I was hired by Station X to create both versions the visuals and integrate the QR code.

Ads for this campaign appeared online, in newspapers, and bus shelters. The number of site visits via scan far exceeded client expectations.

Obscurred Illustrations

Two images were commissioned for this campaign. When obscurred, one showed a woman being chased and another showed a car accident. Both images have hidden QR codes in the upper left corner of the pixelization.
